BIOMASS BURNING CAUSES 70% OF BROWN CLOUD SOOT SAYS STUDY
This article gives details. The blame used to be on coal burning, but this latest study identifies bio mass as the main cause. So bio mass is not so "green" after all.
It's a massive problem, causing deforestation and erosion as well as poor air quality and atmospheric effects. It's likely to get worse: http://www.energybulletin.net/node/47310
Agricultural practices must change from slash and burn, so that crop residue is left to break down, or a switch is made to perennial crops that do not need to be cleared. BioChar is also a promising way of sequestering cleared biomass carbon in the soil while improving its fertility: http://www.biochar.org
Better home design (passive solar) and materials, insulation, draft proofing, solar ovens and solar water heaters can also help.
