THE BBC's CLIMATE SCIENCE PROBLEM

Question Time last week was a car crash for the corporation, with chairman Fiona Bruce interrupting Richard Tice, the Reform Party MP, to contradict his contention that only 4% of carbon dioxide emissions are manmade. Thirty percent was the correct figure, she boldly asserted. Unfortunately, Tice was right, and she was wrong, so the Corporation’s gophers got to work and quietly edited the recording to remove her gaffe. Unfortunately someone noticed, and sceptics had a field day. A few days later, when Nick Robinson had Tice on his Political Thinking podcast. They decided, somewhat surprisingly, to take up cudgels on exactly the same subject, namely the human influence on climate.

Once again, Tice expained that human emissions were dwarfed by natural ones, and there was no attempt to probe this argument more deeply. Afterwards Robinson tweeted a clip from the interview with the comment:

"He’s denying the scientific consensus that climate change is partly man made & can be slowed or halted.”

Tice’s words clearly implied that he thought mankind affected the climate, but only marginally.

ATLANTIC OCEAN CURRENT TO REMAIN SAFE

The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, commonly referred to as the “AMOC,” is a system of ocean currents confined to the Atlantic basin that plays a crucial role in regulating Earth’s climate by transporting heat from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere, says Caltech @ Eurekalert.

The AMOC also modulates regional weather, from the mild summers in Europe to the monsoon seasons in Africa and India. Climate models have long predicted that global warming will cause the AMOC to weaken, with some projecting substantial weakening amounting to a near-collapse relative to the AMOC’s strength today.

Such a weakening would have far-reaching consequences, including changes in regional sea level rise and major shifts in regional climate, such as colder conditions in northern Europe and drier weather in parts of the Amazon and West Africa.

However, a new study from Caltech finds that although the AMOC will weaken under global warming, it is likely to do so to a much lesser extent than current projections suggest.

US LEGAL SYSTEM USED AGAINST OIL COMPANIES IS COMPLETE MADNESS

The drumbeat of climate litigation has grown louder in recent years, fuelled by activists and dubious science.  A new paper claims to link oil and gas companies’ CO2 emissions to specific weather events and trillions in economic damages. This whole piece of nonsense is debunked in this excellent article:

THE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL

On Thursday (May 22) the House of Representatives passed, by a narrow margin of 215-214, what is referred to as the “Big Beautiful Bill” — a massive compendium of taxing and spending measures that can now seek to avoid the filibuster in the Senate on grounds of being a “budget reconciliation.” The bill continues for section after section of savings, with successive parts relating to things like a “greenhouse gas reduction fund,” a “low emissions electricity” program, a fund to address “air pollution in schools,” a fund for “diesel emissions reductions,” and so forth. Over all it adds up to a massive $370 billion.

MORE NONSENSE FROM THE MET OFFICE

It's hard to believe how utterly incompetent the Met Office are when it comes to maintaining a network of weather stations. Day after day Ray Sanders uncovers yet another fiasco behind the siting and maintenance of the UK's stations, as shown in this report, for example:

Trassey Slievenaman DCNN 9245 – Now you see it, now you don’t. Met Office “Excellent” | Tallbloke's Talkshop

We need to remember that the whole climate scare depends on the amount of warming and so the accuracy of temperature readings is vital. It all hinges on a ramshackle bunch of often poorly sited, badly maintained weather stations from which the Met Office claim "record" temperatures with an accuracy of one hundredth of a degree! It would make a good comedy. We could call it "It Ain't Half Hot Mum", or has that title already been used?

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST

That is another net zero policy is pushed into the long grass. Deliverable net zero policies are as rare as hen's teeth. This time it is New Zealand that has elected a more rational government, as opposed to the bunch of hair-shirted puritans that just got in here in the UK.

IS AI COMPATIBLE WITH NET ZERO?

The IEA just posted a whole report dedicated to AI. The demand from data-centers is so large in some places it is already rivaling the kind of monster consumption we are used to seeing from aluminum smelters. Data centre electricity consumption is set to more than double to around 945 TWh by 2030. This is slightly more than Japan’s total electricity consumption today. So how will countries with expensive and unreliable grids fare in this AI world? Not good you would expect, but is the government taking note?

CLIMATE MODELS CAN NO LONGER BE TRUSTED

Chinese researchers from Tongji University led by Prof. Shen and Dr. Wang found that Antarctic ice masses have increased significantly since 2021. The data evaluated by NASA’s GRACE satellite showed an annual loss of 74 billion tons per year from 2002 to 2010. From 2011 to 2020, the amount even doubled. Now the ice has increased by around 108 billion tons year on year.

THE CLIMATE WAR OF EXAGGERATION

While the UK will experience unusually warm weather this week, the cold further east is far more significant from a meteorological perspective. I haven’t seen any reports from Russia about widespread cold, but the UK media portrays a pleasant spring pattern as a “heat bomb.” This is typical of a media landscape that distorts weather and climate discussions.

What’s more critical for Europe right now? The warmth in the UK or the major cold in wheat-growing regions that could impact crops?

MORE DATA MISREPRESENTATION UNCOVERED AT THE MET OFFICE

Last year the UK Met Office was shown to be inventing long-term temperature data at 103 non-existent weather stations. It was claimed in a later risible ‘fact check’ that the data were estimated from nearby well-correlated neighbouring stations. Citizen super sleuth Ray Sanders issued a number of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to learn the identity of these correlating sites but has been told that the information is not held by the Met Office. So the invented figures for the non-existent sites are supposedly provided by stations that the Met Office claims it cannot identify and are presumably not recorded in its copious computer storage and archive

WHY WE ARE HAVING SUCH A WARM DRY SPRING

Meteorologists are warning of the potential for a summer drought, as the UK has seen roughly half its usual amount of rainfall for March and April.

While farmers fret about this year’s harvest, some water companies are urging customers to help reservoir levels recover by limiting water use.
. . .
For several weeks, a stubborn area of high pressure over the UK has diverted the usual flow of mild, moist air from the North Atlantic like a boulder in a river. This is known as a blocking weather system.

60% OF UK VOTERS ARE CLIMATE SCEPTICS

This week, a new polling firm called Merlin Strategy asked voters for their views on tackling climate change. But here’s the crucial thing, it didn’t merely ask them: “Do you support net zero?” Instead, it asked them which was more important: action to achieve net zero, or cutting the cost of living. And guess what they said? Almost 60 per cent chose cutting the cost of living, while a mere 13 per cent chose net zero.

EU CLIMATE PROPAGANDA GOES UP A LEVEL

The paper by Grant et al ticks the full Marxist Bingo Card whipping up class warfare driven by “intergenerational inequality”. It was funded by the EU and is being used to justify the huge cost and deprivation that is being forced on EU citizens. They claim that babies today will live through more ghastly heatwaves than their grandparents born in 1960 did. And it’s all “unprecedented” (they use the term 25 times in the paper).  It’s as if the Holocene did not exist. Sea levels were at least a metre higher 8,000 years ago. How could the world not have been hotter? And how did those cats, dogs, geese and frogs live in the high arctic north of Norway 9,000 years ago. There were thousands of bones in those caves. UK TO SPEND £1.5 BILLION TO STOP WIND TURBINES AFFECTING AIR DEFENCE RADAR

Details of the £1.5 billion Project Njord are to be found in the recently-published Ministry of Defence Acquisition Pipeline document. Seven separate amounts of £210 million under the heading “The procurement of Mitigation Solution(s) to negate the adverse effects of offshore wind farms on AD radars” are being given to RAF radar stations from Saxa Vord in Shetland to Portreath on the coast of Cornwall.

The radar problem might eventually have to be solved by a costly transfer of ground facilities to the air. Professor Justin Bronk is a leading expert on air power and technology and he recently noted that unless there was a “breakthrough” in mitigating the effect of wind turbines on ground-based radar, “Britain is going to need a more capable airborne detection service”.

MET OFFICE DISTORTS THE DATA ON CLIMATE AS USUAL

The article linked below contains a few graphs which illustrates exactly why we should not trust the headlines put out by the Met Office. Exaggeration is a form of lying, by not including all the background data. The Met Office cherry picks one temperature figure taken in one place at one time and publicizes it to make a spurious claim. It is high time they were seriously taken to task very publicly over this, but no one wants to do it.

REFORM TO 'WAGE WAR' AGAINST NET ZERO

We are certainly living in interesting times here in the UK after the recent council elections. The breakdown of consensus politics is clear to see. How will the Labour government react to this? And how will the voters react to the behaviour of Reform councils? I can envisage all sorts of unintended consequences, such as industrial action by a largely left-wing workforce.

A SERIOUS LOOK AT THE SPANISH ELECTRICITY SYSTEM FAILURE

The story of the collapse of the Spanish and Portuguese grids with the resultant blackout and damage to their economies has seem to have disappeared from the mainstream media very swiftly. I wonder if this could in any way be due to the fact that the main reason for it was an over-reliance on renewable energy? Something which would be likely to cause a loss of confidence here in the UK in our own grid. The following article takes a good look:

TONY BLAIR THROWS A SPANNER INTO THE CLIMATE CHANGE WORKS

“People are being asked to make financial sacrifices and changes in lifestyle when they know that their impact on global emissions is minimal,” Blair said in a foreword to a new report from his think tank released on Tuesday. What he is saying is simply acknowledging what the majority of people, as he implies, already know. What is new is that Blair feels confident enough to say this publicly. The Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, has said similar things. Nigel Farage was the first to say it, and the big wins for his Reform Party prove that large numbers of the public agree.

Now that these senior figures in UK politics have gone above the parapet, I can only see others following and soon it will become acceptable to voice these concerns. This is how leaving the EU gradually became acceptable.

EXPOSING THE MET OFFICE DECEIT

A new scientific paper by Paul Burgess can be downloaded at: Paul Burgess | Substack Here is part of it:

Unreliable UK Met Office Peak Temperature Records: The Airport Runway Problem

Author: Paul Burgess, B.Sc., M.Sc., Retired Environment Engineer and Water Resources Engineer, Specialisation in Hydro-Climatology Abstract The UK Met Office’s claimed record high temperatures, notably 40.1°C at Heathrow and 40.3°C at Coningsby in 2022, are unreliable due to unaddressed biases at airport runway sites.

These records, widely publicised as evidence of extreme climate events, fail to account for the urban heat island (UHI) effect, ventilation issues, and sensor calibration problems inherent to airport environments. Estimates suggest the true temperature at Heathrow was likely 36.9-37°C, significantly lower than reported. Furthermore, the Met Office’s use of data from non-existent stations and statistically impossible 33-year averages for short-lived sites casts significant doubt on their data integrity.

This paper argues that the consistent occurrence of record highs at airports is not coincidental but a direct result of these unmitigated factors, amplified by uncritical media reporting. Introduction The UK Met Office has reported unprecedented temperature records in recent years, with 40.1°C at Heathrow and 40.3°C at Coningsby in July 2022 marking the first instances of temperatures exceeding 40°C in the UK. These figures, set at airport runways, have been broadcast globally as milestones in climate history, driving narratives of escalating climate change. However, critical examination reveals that these records are unreliable due to three unaddressed factors: the UHI effect, inadequate ventilation, and potential sensor calibration errors. Compounding this, evidence from

Freedom of Information (FOI) requests highlights the Met Office’s inclusion of data from 103 non-existent stations and the use of 33-year rolling averages for stations operational for as little as 8 years. The consistent siting of record highs at airports underscores a systemic issue, as runway environments amplify these biases. This paper explores these factors and their implications for the trustworthiness of the Met Office’s peak temper
