HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER EMITS GREENHOUSE GASES TOO

This article looks at the emission of methane and nitrous oxide from hydro-electric schemes and finds that it is a significant amount. This begs the question of why these emissions are not counted by the IPCC?

  1. Does that mean that natural lakes are emitters of GH gases too?

  2. I am sure that is correct. As plant and animal debris breaks down it forms methane under certain conditions, hence the old name for methane "fire damp", when it was discovered that stirring the mud at the bottom of ponds could produce a gas that caught fire.
