MORE BAD THERMOMETER DATA

The only evidence for actual warming of the Earth's surface comes from temperature measurements and yet when the actual position of the thermometers is examined it is often found to be seriously badly sited and so the measurements themselves are unreliable. In this video this is again discovered in the USA.

  1. There is a basic error in your assumption of warming on earth. The oceans absorb over 90% of the AGW energy. It is measured quite well by the argonne buoys. They dive deep into the ocean down to 2000 meters measuring the temperature of the layers all the way down and all the way up. All layers of the ocean are warming and it's not from under water volcanoes.

Global warming is sometimes thought of as just an increase in the air temperature, and it is a recurring myth that global warming has magically stopped whenever there is a pause in the long-term trend of increasing air temperature. However, heat is exchanged between all parts of the Earth System, and the oceans can hold vastly more heat than the air. Global warming is actually the total accumulated heat in the whole Earth System that results from the imbalance between incoming solar energy and outgoing heat and reflected energy. This figure from Nuccitelli et al. (2012) [PDF] shows the change in the total heat content of the Earth System since 1960 in terms of its major components: the total land, atmosphere, and ice heating (red) from Church et al. (2011), and the ocean heating for the 0-700 meter layer (light blue) and the 700-2,000 meter layer (dark blue) from Levitus et al. (2012).

More than 90% of global warming goes into heating the oceans, while less than 3% goes into heating the atmosphere. Even relatively small exchanges of ocean heat with the atmosphere, as occurs during the El NiƱo Southern Oscillation (ENSO), can produce short-term fluctuations and pauses in the increasing air temperature.

  2. But it is the atmospheric temperature which affects our climate. By what mechanism does heat get into the oceans? Solar radiation can only penetrate just below the surface. There are a lot of undersea volcanoes, but they are not affected by CO2, so you are now into other causes of warming.

    1. This covers the theory, and evidence. Lower layers of the ocean are warming. In order for this to be undersea volcanoes, one would have to show that volcanoes are increasing in the ocean. And with cooling one would have to show decreasing volcano activity. What really correlates and has the mechanism is GHGs. The 800,000 years of temperature vs GHGs in the atmosphere is lock step together.

Ocean warming not just skin deep
Because of their effect on lowering the temperature gradient of the cool skin layer, increased levels of greenhouse gases lead to more heat being stored in the oceans over the long-term. This ocean warming mechanism has been observed experimentally, and is also supported by numerical modeling.

So although greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, don't directly warm the oceans by channeling heat down into the oceans, they still do indeed heat the oceans, and are likely to do so for a very long time.

  3. How much have the oceans warmed in degrees C?

    1. wrong question. How much energy has it stored. Water has a very high energy density. You can see the stored energy in the link I provided.
