It's a massive problem, causing deforestation and erosion as well as poor air quality and atmospheric effects. It's likely to get worse: http://www.energybulletin.net/node/47310
ReplyDeleteAgricultural practices must change from slash and burn, so that crop residue is left to break down, or a switch is made to perennial crops that do not need to be cleared. BioChar is also a promising way of sequestering cleared biomass carbon in the soil while improving its fertility: http://www.biochar.org
Better home design (passive solar) and materials, insulation, draft proofing, solar ovens and solar water heaters can also help.
