ITALIAN FLOODS JUST AN EXAMPLE OF AN EXTREME WEATHER EVENT
While the media including the BBC are quick to blame climate change for the Italian floods, the data show that flooding in this area is a recurring problem.
The European Mediterranean littoral is highly influenced by the North African Sahara weather systems, winds, and of course atmospheric humidity and temperatures.
We who live along the Mediterranean European coast know that Spring has come late, temperatures have stayed lower than normal and inclement weather persists into May without any signs of Summer, let alone an early one.
The Lombardy floods are the result of humidity pick up by south winds originating along the western Sahara meeting the colder than normal atmosphere resulting in massive precipitation rates.
This had happened in 1966 when the world was officially on a cold phase, when Florence, the Italian city of Arts, flooded from record rains, causing the river Arno to overflow and cause much damage to priceless works of art.
Such events seem to occur during climate downturns from a warm to a cold phase.
