WIND TURBINES ACTUALLY USE ELECTRICITY ON WINDLESS DAYS

I recently travelled from Southampton to Catterick and saw several wind turbines alongside the motorways. Some were stationary, which seemed as expected as the winds were very light, but some were turning slowly. I wondered where they got the power from. It seemed like they had an electric motor inside them. Apparently this actually is the case, because if they are allowed to remain stationary the heavy weight of the blades can cause the bearings to be deformed which is a very costly job to replace them.

So next time you see wind turbines going round on a day with little or no wind you will know that they are not generating electricity, but in fact using it!
