COW FARTS DESTROYING THE PLANET

The man who leads the IPCC, Rajendra Pachauri, has said we should eat less meat to prevent global warming. The brilliant "Watts Up With That" blog makes the following point:

"Before the introduction of cattle, millions upon millions of buffalo dominated the Great Plains of America. They were so thick you could not see where the herd started and where it ended. I can only assume that the anti-meat, manmade global warming crowd must believe that buffalo farts have more socially redeeming value than the same flatulence emitted by cattle. Yes, this is absurd, but the deeper one looks into this global warming juggernaut, the weirder this movement becomes and the more denial is evident."

  1. Derek,
As a newcomer to the anti man made global warming debate may I thank you for producing an excellent UK based reference tool. Like most British, I assumed man made global warming was correct, because that is what the media (such as the BBC) and the scientists (such as the Met Office) said. However, I came across an "anti" article on the web a few weeks ago, and started to do a bit of research myself as, although by no means an expert, I do have a BSc degree in Physical Geography (albeit over 25 years ago!), in which I did some climatology (as it was called in those days).

It rapidly became clear to me that the “facts” of manmade global warming caused by CO2 are not facts at all and the actual data points much more towards natural climate change caused by variations in the earth’s orbit and solar activity. Seems obvious now – how could I have been so deceived? Probably in the same way as the jury, prosecution and judge in last week’s Kingsnorth case. The jury one could expect to cave in to the opinion of an eminent scientist (but why could not a UK scientist have given the information – saving thousands of airmiles and CO2!), but where was the prosecution cross examination of James Hansen? Just a quick trawl of the web could have given some very awkward questions. And should the judge have allowed a technical witness to make political comments about the UK government’s actions and be so obviously partisan to one side of the case. (I am relying on press reports. If I am wrong forgive me).

If this was just an esoteric debate with little practical relevance one could regard statements that our diets and cow farts will cause dangerous global climate change as a huge practical joke (who can come up with the silliest idea, yet still be taken seriously by the media). But it is not. Previous entries on your blog describe the concerns raised by John Hutton regarding our future energy supplies. If we turn our backs on coal and gas fired power stations and have left it too late to develop nuclear, where will our power come from? Your blogs on the inefficiency of wind turbines makes fascinating reading! (As an aside, whatever happened to hydro electric power? At least rivers flow most of the time, unlike wind!).

And yet I am surprised that no seems to comment on your excellent postings. Have I missed something? I note a few UK participants on the American Watts up with that? blog, but is there nothing UK based? Come to think of it, are there any well known UK critics of man made global warming, or as the Government now controls university research funding, is criticism effectively stifled?

So what will it take for the British Public to see through comments such as those made by Rajendra Pachauri and others? Perhaps a cold December a few years time, when everyone switches on their ovens on Christmas morning, and then the power goes off? Hopefully people will see sense before it comes to that - for people matter more than any theory.

Apologies for the length of this comment, and going somewhat off subject at times, but I wanted to get it off my chest,
    Thank you

  2. Mike,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I am pleased to get some feedback. Althought I get around 100 visits a day, many from the USA, I don't get many comments. I aim to provide coverage of the issues, with a short comment. There is a growing small number of politicians who are publicly warning of the dangers of what is happening. The Freedom Association is one organisation on our side. More of this to come!
