Here is an example of the sort of extra control being considered:
We know that even the current 70mph speed limit is not being observed in many parts of the network, so it is unlikely that a small change to 64mph will fare any better. With the governing Conservatives so far behind in the polls it is hard to see them wanting to bring in any more unpopular measures. I am sure that Labour would do it, if they were in power. There lies the problem, there is no winnable alternative. There is the tiny Reform Party, currently at around 7 or 8% support. Voting for them would simply give more seats to Labour.
When I see an article on RE in Brit, I think of you. This fits in to the past relevant discussions on your blog.
ReplyDeleteNatural gas is the higher cost fuel in GB which also dictates the cost of electricity. Burning less natural gas will bring down the cost of energy and make life easier on the Brits scraping by on meager amounts of money. Natural gas is no longer a secure supply that Europe can count on. Its smarter to move more and more to renewable energy.

Wind power generation reached a record high last year in the UK, accounting for a 26.8% share of total electricity generation, the BBC reported, citing data published by National Grid.
Together with nuclear, the report noted, wind accounted for more electricity production than fossil fuels. That’s despite the fact that gas was the single largest source of electricity generation in the country in 2022, accounting for 38.5 percent of the total, per the National Grid numbers.
The numbers also showed that for five months last year, more than 50 percent of the electricity produced in the country was generated by wind and nuclear. Even so, Britons paid exorbitant prices for electricity because, like in continental Europe, the electricity market in the UK has all prices based on the price of gas.
I agree, it is a crazy system. It allows the wind farms to make exorbitant profits by selling way above the price they agreed at the time they were given a license. The trouble is , there is no real competition. The wind farms are intermittent and so the system needs back up and that makes it much more expensive.
ReplyDeleteYour prices are higher due to cost of natural gas. When Briton doubles is RE output, mostly wind, the natural gas fill in will decrease lowering the cost of energy. If that is passed in savings to Brits depends on your individual capitalistic systems. It could be higher utility profits or lower costs to the consumer. Plus the negative health effects of fossil fuels is an indirect cost of fossil fuels not taken into account.
