AVERAGE UK TEMPERATURES HAVE NOT INCREASED OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS

The headline has been disputed by someone at news agency Reuters, who have relied on information from the Met Office. The dispute is answered by Paul Homewood as follows:

“If UK temperatures in the last 20 years were increasing as rapidly as the Met Office suggest, it should be obvious from their own data. Yet according to the Met Office’s State of UK Climate 2022 report, published today, UK temperature between 1998 and 2007 averaged 9.35°C, compared to 9.44°C between 2013 and 2022, a statistically insignificant change.”

Clearly these statistics can be used to show different results depending on how they are used.

  1. I've singled out this data from the press below that is being quoted from the MET. If this isn't clear signals of warming in GB, then what does it take to convince you. GB is on a warming trend just as the same as the rest of the world.

The last decade (2013-2022) was 0.3C warmer than the 1991-2020 average and 1.1C warmer than 1961-1990. It is the warmest 10-year period on record since 1659.

Temperatures exceeding 40C will occur more frequently in future as the climate warms, scientists have said (PA Graphics)
    – Winter, spring, summer and autumn in 2022 all ranked among the top 10 warmest seasons since 1884.

    – All the top 10 warmest years for the UK since 1884 have all occurred in the 21st century.

    – The last decade (2013-2022) was 0.3C warmer than the 1991-2020 average and 1.1C warmer than 1961-1990. It is the warmest 10-year period on record since 1659.

    – Also in that decade there were 4-7% fewer days of air and ground frost than the 1991-2020 average and 15-23% fewer than 1961-1990.

    – 2022 was also the warmest year since 1870 for sea surface temperature.

  2. Statistics can be used to show very different things depending on the start and finish dates. One thing you wrote is worth emphasising which is "there were 4-7% fewer days of air and ground frost than the 1991-2020 average and 15-23% fewer than 1961-1990". That is surely beneficial.

That's called cherry picking. The rest of the picture as a whole needs to be taken into account. South west United States is setting some pretty tough temperature records for July. This is a record and this stuff kills more people and makes more people sick from the heat.

Phoenix’s record streak of temperatures above 110F ends after 31 days
Reprieve expected to be brief, with the forecast calling for highs again above 110F for several days later in the week
