COULD A TRUMP RETURN PUT AN END TO THE NET ZERO ERA?

While in office, Trump boasted about wanting the US oil and gas industry to “drill, baby, drill,” implementing expansionist policies that enhanced the country’s energy security, rendering it almost energy independent before the Covid bust set in during 2020.

Nothing much appears to have changed in Trump’s general approach to the energy question, and he promises if elected in 2024 to quickly reverse much of the Biden Green New Deal approach starting on the day he is sworn into office. There is no reason to disbelieve that commitment.

So, assuming Sunak follows through on the legislative front and further assuming a Trump victory in 2024 (he leads Biden by 9 points in the new Washington Post/ABC poll released over the weekend), would a two-pronged rollback of Net Zero action by a pair of the developed world’s strongest democracies ring a death knell for the entire green energy push?

  1. Trump is not even a well thought person whatsoever. Science supports net zero and this will be an issue long after Trump is gone.

  2. Net zero has to have momentum, hence the massive publicity with constant new pledges and conferences etc. As soon as the going gets tough there will be resistance. I would be amazed if we get anywhere near net zero by 2050. When one or two of the big nations decide to pull out of the road to net zero it will be hard (almost impossible) for the rest to continue.

  3. Trump did not add to 100% RE nor did he slow it down. The IRA law is the law of the land. It's difficult to change this. Basically in American politics, Trump is a 3 time loser. The REpublican party is basically in tatters over here fighting amongst themselves. They weren't like this until Trump got into office. A minority of extremists are basically shattering the Republican Party.

  4. Yet, according to the latest opinion poll he leads Biden by 9 points in spite of all his problems.

    1. Polls vary over time. Trump's past has basically caved them in. When it comes down to it, enough people fear Trump on the right to cross over and vote against Trump.
