This article explains that we could obtain 20% of our energy needs by burning waste rather than recycling by 2020. An interesting thought in the current economic climate when we are creating mountains of waste for which there is no market to recycle.

Modern incinerators have strict controls to prevent any poisonous gases being released. CO2, of course is not harmful, as it is essential to all green plants.
