Very sound, persuasive, non-emotional look at several sides of this issue. I recall an article in 2008-2009 time frame in IEEE Spectrum that compared the time it took industry & science to reach peak performance for different technologies for energy and industry, and the last revolution in oil/gas and nuclear took nearly 100 years (if I remember correctly). Their assessment of solar/wind to reach the same level (not even accounting for the important issues brought up here wrt the environment and impacts to labor) was that it will take just as long. Will solar and wind be a great complement to hydrocarbon-based energy? Absolutely. Will it replace it? Never.
