SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE WARMING EXPLAINED
This has received a lot of coverage recently and the link below gives a good explanation:
With added co2 to the atmosphere, more energy is directed to the surface of the earth which is 70% water. The site below goes into interesting detail the physics of the oceans warming.
Ocean warming not just skin deep Because of their effect on lowering the temperature gradient of the cool skin layer, increased levels of greenhouse gases lead to more heat being stored in the oceans over the long-term. This ocean warming mechanism has been observed experimentally, and is also supported by numerical modeling.
So although greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, don't directly warm the oceans by channeling heat down into the oceans, they still do indeed heat the oceans, and are likely to do so for a very long time.
As Justin Rowlatt writes, this cannot all be blamed on AGW, and natural factors are at play as well. In fact, the heat content of the oceans is so great, that GHGs can have very little direct impact on sea temperatures.
What does have a major impact is the power of the sun. And according to Prof Ole Humlum, solar irradiance, effectively the amount of energy emitted by the sun, rose steadily through the 20thC,although there is no data since 2014:

To add to my comment above, Justin Rowlatt is just wrong. The sun has actually slightly cooled and yet earths energy system has increased.
