OUR SINKING CITIES

Thailand, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Egypt, China, and Indonesia are among the countries experiencing the highest relative sea level rise. Their population-weighted coastal averages range from roughly 7 to 10 millimeters per year.

Some cities are sinking, not merely twice as fast, but six times faster than the seas are rising. Ponder that a thousand tide gauges around the world showed seas are only rising at about 1mm a year. (Beenstock). In a funny coincidence the original raw satellite data in the 1990s showed a 1mm rise. Then it got adjusted up to 3mm using one sinking gauge in HongKong. If we look at 60 beaches in Europe and isolate the most stable one of them — that also shows seas are rising at 1.25mm/year.
