The UK has only around 42 days of diesel reserves, among the lowest in Europe, and imports 54 per cent of the diesel it consumes. If diesel prices go up, it costs the farmer more to grow our food: it costs the lorry drivers more to transport it. The Government, by issuing a simple exemption to the ETS and cutting fuel duty, has it in its power to make a serious start on reducing Britain's strategic vulnerability and containing the cost of living crisis.
