This article explains how some of the temperature measuring equipment aboard weather satellites has been degraded over time leading to inaccurate measurements. Some of the recorded readings were out by over 100%. The question is - can we trust the accuracy of the rest of it?

THE EU ROLE IN CLIMATE RESEARCH

Today I was reading the EUReferendum blog, as I often do, when I came across a link showing just how much funding the EU is pumping into scientific research into climate change. Here is the link. In the third para there is a link to John Rosenthal's analysis of the EU Connection in Climate Research. What this shows is that very large sums of EU money are being used to effectively buy the answers they want to drive the political aims of the EU in terms of the climate agenda. I highly recommend reading this to tie up the climategate emails and what they really mean for the integrity and freedom of scientific research in this area.

EXTREME WEATHER

This report about the 2003 European heatwave also talks about earlier heatwaves which were far worse than the more recent ones. Here's another report of exceptionally cold weather in Peru; and here's a further account of the current Russian heatwave . All these reports show is that we are and have always been subject to extremes of weather. None of these reports is evidence of any discernible pattern or of 'climate change'.

SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO FALL

Sea surface temperatures (SST's) have been falling for the past few months now and continue to do, according to Prof Roy Spencer. Climate change policies risk major damage to the economic recovery

A preoccupation with 'green' energy policies at any cost undermines the competitiveness of manufacturing industry

A newly published report from the independent think tank Civitas reveals that the increased costs of energy arising from 'green' energy policies are set to increase significantly. Increased costs will hurt manufacturing at a time when much depends on the sector to generate the economic growth the country needs, and to rebalance the economy.

In British Energy Policy And The Threat To Manufacturing Industry, Ruth Lea and Jeremy Nicholson examine the impact of the recent Labour Government's policy on energy prices. They argue that Labour's aim to reduce carbon emissions and increase the proportion of energy generated from renewable sources, significantly increased costs for energy consumers. Lea and Nicholson's analysis provides a timely warning because under the new Coalition Government, energy policy could be as damaging to manufacturing industry as it was under Labour.

Business electricity bills already incur a 21% 'surcharge' because of 'green' commitments

Lea and Nicholson cite evidence that the recent Labour Government's climate change strategy hiked up electricity bills. For example, BERR estimated in 2008 that the 'surcharge' on electricity prices, attributable to climate-change policies, amounted to an extra 14% for domestic users and 21% for business. Furthermore, DECC's The Renewable Energy Strategy (2009) suggested that these surcharges could be as high as 33% and 70% by 2020 respectively.

Lea and Nicholson highlight the two major legislative commitments responsible:

1. The Climate Change Act (2008) - including a legally binding target of at least an 80% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

2. The EU's Renewables Directive (2008) - under which the UK must meet 15% of its final energy consumption through renewable sources by 2020.

Britain will bear a greater cost than other countries

This country is particularly badly placed for such commitments. First, Britain is starting with a very modest renewables industry, so the burden of the EU's Renewables Directive will be substantial:

'The proportion of renewables to total energy consumption in 2005 was just 1.3%, compared with an EU27 average of 8.5%.' (p.6)

Secondly, even without the extra costs associated with climate change policies that are due to be imposed, Lea and Nicholson argue, Britain's industrial electricity prices already tend to be amongst the highest of any major economy. This puts British business and, in particular, energy intensive users at a cost and international competitiveness disadvantage. Moreover, given the expected increases in the climate change surcharges, Britain's cost disadvantage will almost certainly increase, thus undermining competitiveness further.

'Such extra costs would inevitably tilt the balance for many businesses and render them unviable in Britain.' (p.10)

Energy intensive industries to be hardest hit
- with a domino effect on downstream industries

Energy intensive users, including steel, glass and ceramics, bulk chemicals, industrial gases and cement, are especially vulnerable. These are important contributors to GDP not only in their own right but also because of their inter-dependent relationship with 'downstream' industries. As Jeremy Nicholson comments:

'Britain is already losing energy intensive businesses because of the lack of competitiveness... There is no doubt that high energy prices have already been a factor behind industry closures.' (pp.10-11)

Lea and Nicholson outline specific examples of the layers of 'fall out' from such closures - for example, the INEOS Chlor plant in Cheshire manufactures chlorine and caustic soda which are vital inputs to a wide-range of 'downstream' industries including disinfectants, plastics, pharmaceuticals, soaps and detergents.

'Rather than import the basic chemicals, many of the downstream businesses would migrate to countries where they were still domestically produced for reasons of reliability of supply and transport costs.' (p.13)

Policy must help rather than hinder

As the economy struggles to emerge from the economic crisis of 2008-2009, it is widely assumed that the manufacturing sector will contribute positively to the general recovery and the rebalancing of the economy. Under these circumstances, the report calls on the new Coalition Government to ensure that manufacturing industries are supported by policies that help rather than hinder their competitiveness to enable economic growth and therefore lead to fewer public spending cuts. According to Ruth Lea:

"The economy desperately needs a competitive and thriving manufacturing sector if it is to prosper. Competitive energy prices are vital to the success of manufacturers, especially energy intensive users. Government energy policies are, however, remorselessly driving up energy costs thus risking the 'migration' of manufacturing plants to economies where the costs are lower." COULD CFC's HAVE CAUSED GLOBAL WARMING?

This article refers to a new peer-reviewed paper which suggests that CFCs, rather than CO2, were responsible for the recent warming of the 1980's and 1990's. The paper, which can be read from a link in the article, concludes that, since CFCs have now been banned and are declining, the future leads not to warming but to cooling. An interesting hypothesis.

MP SAYS RUSELL INQUIRY WAS INADEQUATE

This report in the Daily Express says MP Graham Stringer, who was on the original parliamentary inquiry into the leaked climate emails, has called the latest review by Sir Muir Russell 'inadequate' and wants parliament to look into it further.

SCRAP THE CLIMATE ACT!

The new coalition government, in the person of Nick Clegg (Deputy PM), has started a website in which members of the public are invited to put forward legislation that they want to see scrapped. One suggestion on the site is the scrapping of the Climate Change Act which sets out the UK's unilateral programme of decarbonisation.

I have no doubt they will avoid repealing this, but wouldn't it be delightfully embarrassing if it got so much support that they squirmed a bit. This report confirms the Muir Russell report was another feeble review into the climategate emails. We have now had three whitewashes which is no surprise to most. However they do not fool anyone who has read these emails which clearly show that these scientists were working to conceal the weakness of their work and trying to prevent other scientists from getting their work published while preventing their own data from being accessed.

G20 ABANDONS PLEDGES ON CLEAN ENERGY

This piece from the Earth Times (not a publication I often refer to!) makes a very interesting observation on the recent press release from the G20 - 'They went through this document with a vacuum cleaner to remove any reference to clean energy. In the Pittsburgh G20 summit (in September 2009), there were 8 references to 'clean energy' - in this one, there is zero," WWF climate expert Kim Carstensen said.

I don't believe this could happen by accident. Clearly there must be major disagreements on this issue.

A REAL DANGER FROM CO2

This report highlights a real danger from CO2 when it is in very high concentrations. In this case it is being emitted naturally by volcanic activity, but this could be caused if the gas is artificially stored undeground and then leaks out. It is certainly something which cannot be ignored, just like the storage of nuclear waste.

THE IPCC LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING OF FACTORS AFFECTING CLIMATE

The next time you meet someone who says that scientists have a good level of understanding of the causes of global warming you could refer them to this table (2.11) from the 4th IPCC Report, Working Group 2. You will need to scroll down to page 200 (chapter 2) to see the table which displays sideways. This table lists 16 factors which the IPCC identify as contributing to global warming (they use the term 'radiative forcing' to describe this). The interesting thing about the table is that out of these 16, for only one of them does the IPCC claim to have a high level of scientific understanding (LOSU). For two of them there is a 'medium' LOSU, another two 'medium/low', six have a 'low' LOSU, and five 'very low'. It should be noted that the 16 factors are only the ones known to the IPCC; there are probably several others as yet unknown altogether. It is from these 'forcings that they feed in the information into the computers to give their predictions of future temperatures over the coming century.It seems extraordinary that the science which world governments put so much faith in is based on such meagre understanding.

I have been handed a copy of the correspondence below, in which it is clear that HRH Prince Philip had personally asked that Ian Plimer, the renowned Geologist and well known climate sceptic author, be invited to give the Annual Prince Philip Lecture, only to find that he is later pressured into rescinding the invitation. The excuse given - "as I am sure you are aware, members of the Royal Family need to be scrupulous in avoiding any appearance of advocating or supporting a particular political stance", seems rather disingenuous, as Prince Charles has very publicly taken a stance personally on a number of politically sensitive matters, notably on climate change where he is a well known alarmist.

This is the highest profile example yet of pressure being applied to prevent any alternative to the 'official stance' being publicised.

Buckingham Palace as Wednesday 5 May 2010, starting at 6pm. I do

WHAT IS THE REAL COST OF SWITCHING TO LOW CARBON ENERGY?

According to this article it is alleged by the government to be £77 per household, but in this earlier article it says £250, and one 'expert' in that same article says it could easily be £500. It all looks very vague and I wonder whether the government or anyone else has any idea of the true cost.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO BUY SUPPORT FOR GW?

Here is a fascinating, and at the same time disturbing, insight into the large sums of government money being offered to universities in the UK to come up with the "right" answers on climate change. Is it surprising that when salaries and careers depend on it that they do so?

COAL STILL CHEAPER THAN BIOMASS

This article in the Times looks at the decision of the management of the Drax power station to continue to burn coal rather than go over to biomass. The decision is based on cost (of course) and apparently even with the current level of government subsidy coal is cheaper, even after buying carbon emission trading permits. We are seeing the start of a massive increase in fuel and energy prices, largely driven by a vain, but hopeless attempt to reduce CO2 emissions.

Here is the report. It will be interesting to compare the findings with the UK report when it eventually comes out.

THE 'GREEN RIP-OFF'

George Monbiot, the darling of the Greens, is starting to question some of the key tenets of the environmentalists in this article. He rightly recognises that solar panels are not a viable way of making electricity. When he starts to question it, how long will it be before our politicians start to do so? The following quote is very pertinent:

"To the greens who accuse me of treachery I say this: we do not have a moral obligation to support all forms of renewable energy, however inefficient and expensive they may be. We do have a moral obligation not to be blinded by sentiment. We owe it to the public, and to our credibility, to support the schemes which work, fairly and cheaply, and reject the schemes which cost a fortune and make no difference."

So back to nuclear and fossil fuels then!

BACK TO SQUARE ONE ON GW

This paper takes a look at the world temperature data supplied by CRU and compares it to original data. It shows that there is a significant difference in the warming trend, sufficient to cast doubt about the data on which the whole GW scare is based. Scientists must now go back to square one and re-do their data calculations in an open and transparent way, so that they can be checked.

UK REPORT PAINTS APOCALYPTIC FUTURE

Don't be scared, but this UK report by the Chief Scientist and his advisors is not to be read by those of a nervous disposition - unless you are of a sceptic nature, in which case it would be funny, were it not for the massive bill we are all paying based on trying to prevent it.

COMPUTER EXPERT FINDS ERRORS IN CRU CODE

This article gives the details. What he also says is that he cannot look at the most crucial codes as they have stil not been published. The more we learn, the more errors we find. These scientists remind me of naughty schoolboys who have produced the 'right' answers, but show no working out.

HAS AL GORE GOT ANY FRIENDS?

Apparently Al gore has been given an honoray degree by his local university in Tennessee, but a local paper is running a poll to see what the public think about it. When I last looked at it here, no less than 98% thought he should not have been awarded it. If you are starting to feel sorry for poor old Al, there is still time to vote.

For a bit of light relief this clip depicting the 'bunker mentality' is a cleverly subtitled clip from a film of Hitler's final days as though he is masterminding the global warming campaign. If one imagines the conspirators at CRU replacing the Third Reich in the clip it does seem very amusing.

IPCC SHAMED BY BOGUS RAINFOREST CLAIM

This Times article gives the details. Yet another example of shoddy review of items put into this so-called "authoritative" document which has now been shown to be very flawed indeed.

IPCC Chairman, Rajendra Pachauri, is closely connected with The Energy Research Institute (TERI), which has been given £10 million by the UK government to carry on with its 'good work'. UK taxpayers will be pleased.

This article in the Times reports his comments in the light of the email revelations. The tide is beginning to turn. Once the level of certainty is reduced the need for action will recede.

STERN REVIEW UNDERMINED BY FATAL ERROR

The deeply flawed Stern Review, which was supposed to show that the cost of de-carbonising our economy was a financially worthwhile thing to do, has been sunk still further by revelations that it relied on incorrect figures for the cost of hurricane damage. This report gives the details. It looks like Stern is now dead and buried.

COPENHAGEN DEAL GOES BELLY UP

This report from the Hindu Times tells us that India and China will not sign the Copenhagen Declaration, and the UN has now extended the deadline for nations to declare their voluntary emission reduction commitments from January 31, indefinitely. In other words, for all practical purposes it is dead in the water. So it wil be interesting to see how the EU nations respond to this reality. Will they continue to pretend that they are sticking to their previous commitments or will they ditch them in response to the real world?

IPCC CHAIRMAN IN FRAUD CLAIM

This report explains how the IPCC Chairman, Rajendra Pachauri, is link to companies that will receive large grants to research Himalayan glaciers, as a result of the false claims made in the IPCC report. Oh what a tangled web they weave!

NATURAL DISASTERS FALSELY BLAMED ON GW BY IPCC

Yes, another false claim by the IPCC. This time they use the flimsiest excuse to make the claim that hurricanes and floods were increasing, when, according to this Times article the claim was not upheld at all. With so many lies and exaggerations the IPCC is becoming totally discredited. This is not science, but a completely politicised process of propaganda.

CLIMATE SCIENCE CONSPIRATORS TO ESCAPE PROSECUTION

It appears from this report that the scientists responsible for writing the emails from the UKs Climate Research Unit are to escape prosecution for deliberately avoiding complying with the Freedom of Information Act. The Act was so badly drafted that there was a loophole in it.

THE IPCC REPORT - IS IT A COMPLETE SHAMBLES?

This research by a Canadian blogger casts doubt on a whole range of reports contained in the vast IPCC document which was supposed to be the unimpeachable source of scientific truth on which the world's governments were to enact legislation to "save the planet".

After the recent email leaks followed by the ridiculous claims about Himalayan glaciers disappearing by 2035, no doubt others will take a critical look at the rest of the document. Who knows what other skeletons will be uncovered? It's looking as though anything scary went in with hardly any checks at all.

SCIENTISTS BEHAVING BADLY

Although this report in Nature is now 5 years old, I have only recently come across it and it is extremely relevant to the current debate over climategate type behaviour. The conclusion is that all scientific data must be subjected to the widest possible scrutiny. You cannot take anyone's word for anything without question.

GULF STREAM NOT SLOWING

Just in case the alarmists try a new scare in the light of the recent cold weather, here is a report to dispel the one about the Gulf Stream slowing down.

MET OFFICE REJECTS ALARMIST SEA LEVEL RISE PREDICTIONS

This article in the Times points out the Met Office rejecting an alrmist prediction of sea level rise which was presented at the Copenhagen summit. Could this be the beginning of a change of heart by this normally arch alarmist organisation? Maybe they are belatedly realising that exaggeration has not done their cause any good.

CLIMATEGATE HEADING FOR WHITEWASH?

This report suggests that the climategate investigation is likely to be a whitewash, as it is being carried out by someone who leads an organisation which is a strong advocate of severe cuts in CO2 emissions. Why am I not surprised?

The big problem for the alarmists is that if the report turns out that way then it will have no credibility, as the evidence has already been analysed.

UK GOVERNMENT FOUND EXAGGERATING GW CLAIMS

So, what's new? Yet another case pointed out in this Guardian report. The public are now becoming so used to government spin that it hardly raises an eyebrow; yet it ought to be regarded as something shocking. However it simply weakens still further public trust and makes them even more cynical about the whole global warming issue.

US INSURANCE GROUP SCEPTICAL OF CLIMATE CHANGE PREDICTIONS

This article from the New York Times explains how the insurance industry is being forced to comply with the 'official' line on climate predictions with the resultant increases in premiums to cover the cost of these extra so-called risks.

IPCC - GARBAGE IN - GARBAGE OUT

Surely this report must reduce the credibility of the IPCC still further, coming as it goes, so soon after the climategate email fiasco. It was only a few weeks ago that ITN were putting out a series of on the spot reports pushing the 'fact' that Himalayan glaciers were in meltdown. Now comes this retraction, but don't expect even one sentence on the ITN news to tell the viewers the truth - that would be too much to hope for!

A recent BBC report suggested another error lead to this inaccurate report. With so much incompetence it is hard to keep up!
