This article describes the dilemma facing them. It looks as though the legislation is unlikely to get an easy passage. A watered-down compromise is most likely, which will end up satisfying no one. It will nevertheless still cause damage to the economy.

EARTH HOUR?

Only a few extreme environmental fanatics and anoraks were aware, but apparently we have just had something called Earth Hour, which was meant to be an hour when we switched off our lights to show we are serious about "combatting global warming". According to this article the event passed largely unnoticed, which just shows the general lack of interest.

It makes the good point that without all the fossil fuel generated power we should find ourselves cold and dark for much more than one hour. Maybe it would be good to remind ourselves of what we could lose if power becomes too costly and unreliable.

This article by the redoubtable Christopher Booker looks at the current expedition to the Arctic to measure the ice thickness. It seems to have been a triumph - in so far as it has high-lighted the intense coldness being experienced(-40C). No doubt if the ice does not prove to be thin enough the results will be buried out of sight.

This new study shows that dust storms and volcanic activity play a major role in the temperature of the Atlantic Ocean. Nature is again shown to be the major driver of our climate.

Just as in the USA, the home industry is faced with penalties that similar industries in developing countries will not face. The new-found "warming" has, as we thought, turned out to be bogus. What this episode reveals, is the lengths that some scientists will go to, in order to produce propaganda. However, every time they are found out, it undermines their credibility a little more.

That was the President of the Royal Society, speaking to the Admiralty in London on November 20, 1817.

COMPUTER MODEL CONJURES UP ANTARCTIC WARMING

A new report suggests that, contrary to previous temperature measurements, the Antarctic is in fact very slightly warming (0.1C per decade). However the results are not based on actual measurements, but interpreting old data using computer programmes.

Christopher Booker, in his Sunday Telegraph column explains the dodgy methodology. It seems the alarmists are getting ever more desperate to convince an increasingly cynical world.

I have now received an acknowledgement from the BBC of my complaint and await a further response. There is still time for anyone to put a complaint in, and I urge you to do so if you feel upset by this, as the more complaints they get, the more likely they are to take notice.

US PROPAGANDA TARGETS THE YOUNG

Here's an example of what the climate realist movement is up against. When asked "what are you doing to save the planet", how many young people will reply, "where is the evidence that it's under threat"? Emotion trumps cold facts in many young minds. It is vital that students are not simply presented with a one-sided emotional argument, but how can this avalanche of officially sponsored material be countered?

Only by sceptics writing in the press and talking on the radio. People such as Christopher Booker and others can and do have an effect, but many more need to speak out. In my experience when asked directly for the evidence for CO2 causing dangerous global warming, most speakers cannot give a good answer (which is not surprising as there isn't one).What they do is trot out the same old mantra about the IPCC being beyond challenge, consisting of "thousands of peer-reviewed top scientists". That argument is rubbish and it must be demolished robustly.

ARE NATIONAL GOVERNMENTS COLLAPSING?

Some people are predicting that the current economic crisis is going to lead to the collapse of national governments, leading to a power vacuum at national level. See this exchange between me and contributer Tim Auld. I accept that there will be changes of government, as voters show their displeasure at the way things are turning out, but that is not to say that thare is any threat to the system itself.

One thing that is certain is that now is a very bad time for governments to be spending billions of pounds or dollars on decarbonising their economy which will only make matters worse.

BBC CREATES ITS OWN OBAMA SOUNDBITE

Here is a very interesting observation on the BBC's Newsnight programme. It seems that their science correspondent did not think that Obama's speech hit the right note on climate change, and so she cobbled together different bits from different parts of the speech to produce the effect she wanted. Now that's what I call real propaganda!

CO2 HISTORY "REVISED" BY IPCC

On page 6 of this booklet is a record of the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere measured by traditional chemical methods from 1800 up to 1961 when they ended and were replaced by modern methods of infra-red spectrometry. The historical measurements are very different from those which are now being used by the IPCC to show the "revised" scientific record of CO2 used to back up the theory of man-made CO2 causing global warming. As CO2 is constantly being added and removed from the atmosphere by living organisms it is likely that the level will vary from day to day and place to place. This is not the picture we are given by the IPCC who want to show that there is a "background" level which is increasing year on year. This subject has been investigated by Ernst Beck who has written a paper on the subject here.

MARTIAN CLIMATE DEFEATS COMPUTER MODELS

Compared to Earth, Mars is pretty simple: no oceans with complex thermo-haline flows or El Ninos, no complicated continental or vegetation patterns nor even the unpredictable chaos of the climate determining clouds and water vapour and certainly no evil CO2 emitting humans. But NASA just admitted that their most sophisticated climate models cannot predict the climate on Mars: "It's a bit of a mystery how this is happening ..... Global climate models that are running on Mars would not predict this", NASA's chief scientist said. See here for the article.

The whole fraud of human caused global warming is based upon NASA's climate models of the earth and if they can't get even close in the relatively simple environment of Mars then portraying that the models are reliable in the vastly more complicated environment of earth is nonsense and so is everything else based on it!

KYOTO EXPOSED AS A USELESS SHAM

Here's an excellent piece by Dominic Lawson which exposes the utter futility of the Kyoto type of policy with carbon trading, offsets and the rest. The whole thing is simply a recipe for corruption on a grand scale, while the honest go to the wall. At the same time hardly any CO2 is actually saved. It simply gets emitted from elsewhere. How fortunate that it doesn't actually matter anyway from a climate point of view.

80 BILLION A YEAR TO FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE

An Oxfam director said at the recent conference in Poland that the developing world will need between 50 and 80 billion dollars a year to "fight climate change", according to this report in the Washington Post. Yet another glimpse of the true agenda of the UN. You note there is no mention of the chance of success in the fight, because they know that there is no prospect of all this having any effect whatsoever.

UK COUNCILS URGED TO SUPPORT GOVERNMENT'S EMISSION TARGETS

Local councils are being pressured by the LGA (Local Government Association), in an unprecedented move, to get them to sign up to support the unilateral cuts in CO2 emissions contained in the Climate Change Act. This statement is part of a little known document called the Nottingham Declaration. The LGA is determined to get all local councils to sign up by the end of the year and so are chasing the 10% who have not yet signed. My own council - New Forest - is the latest to sign, despite the doubts of some members. Given the massive propaganda campaign by the government, backed by most of the media it is not surprising that the majority of councillors would support this, but there is no doubt that opposition would be much higher if councillors were not pressured into voting for something that many do not really support. In the end I was the only councillor who voted against it, something I was prepared to do no matter what the consequences. It will be interesting to see if there is any press reaction to my objection. Of course I appreciate that this is of little interest to the majority of the general public who are concentrating on who is going to win the next TV talent contest. They will only become interested in this debate when the lights go out due to power cuts and their jobs disappear to China and India.

EU EMISSIONS CUTS WATERED DOWN

EU emissions cuts could be reduced by as little as 4% by 2020, according to this report when all the offset schemes are taken into account. This will have zero effect on the amount of CO2 in the atmospheric level of the gas, which will go on increasing due to the increases from the likes of China and India. It is now clear that there is no way we can control our CO2 output, let alone control the climate. The public are fast realising this for themselves, despite all the hand-ringing from our political masters along with emotive pictures of melting ice and stranded polar bears.

EMINENT SCIENTISTS WHO DISAGREE WITH THE CO2 GW THEORY

Alarmists often dismiss the views of climate sceptics by saying that only a few "fringe" scientists disagree with the "consensus" view, or that the lists of sceptic scientists are not experts in the field of climate science. To rebut this sort of nonsense it may be better to present them with a shorter list containing scientists with such impeccable credentials that no one could possibly claim they were not qualified. To help, I present such a list below. It is not meant to be a complete list, but simply a very impressive one.

Dr. Edward Wegman--former chairman of the Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics of the National Academy of Sciences--demolished the famous "hockey stick" graph that launched the global warming panic.

Dr. David Bromwich--president of the International Commission on Polar Meteorology--says "it's hard to see a global warming signal from the mainland of Antarctica right now."

Prof. Paul Reiter--Chief of Insects and Infectious Diseases at the famed Pasteur Institute--says "no major scientist with any long record in this field" accepts Al Gore's claim that global warming spreads mosquito-borne diseases.

Prof. Hendrik Tennekes--director of research, Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute--states "there exists no sound theoretical framework for climate predictability studies" used for global warming forecasts.

Dr. Christopher Landsea--past chairman of the American Meteorological Society's Committee on Tropical Meteorology and Tropical Cyclones--says "there are no known scientific studies that show a conclusive physical link between global warming and observed hurricane frequency and intensity."

Dr. Antonino Zichichi--one of the world's foremost physicists, former president of the European Physical Society, who discovered nuclear antimatter--calls global warming models "incoherent and invalid."

Dr. Zbigniew Jaworowski--world-renowned expert on the ancient ice cores used in climate research--says the U.N. "based its global-warming hypothesis on arbitrary assumptions and these assumptions, it is now clear, are false."

Prof. Tom V. Segalstad--head of the Geological Museum, University of Oslo--says "most leading geologists" know the U.N.'s views "of Earth processes are implausible."

Dr. Syun-Ichi Akasofu--founding director of the International Arctic Research Center, twice named one of the "1,000 Most Cited Scientists," says much "Arctic warming during the last half of the last century is due to natural change."

Dr. Claude Allegre--member, U.S. National Academy of Sciences and French Academy of Science, he was among the first to sound the alarm on the dangers of global warming. His view now: "The cause of this climate change is unknown."

Dr. Richard Lindzen--Professor of Meteorology at M.I.T., member, the National Research Council Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, says global warming alarmists "are trumpeting catastrophes that couldn't happen even if the models were right."

Dr. Habibullo Abdussamatov--head of the space research laboratory of the Russian Academy of Science's Pulkovo Observatory and of the International Space Station's Astrometria project says "the common view that man's industrial activity is a deciding factor in global warming has emerged from a misinterpretation of cause and effect relations."

Dr. Richard Tol--Principal researcher at the Institute for Environmental Studies at Vrije Universiteit, and Adjunct Professor at the Center for Integrated Study of the Human Dimensions of Global Change, at Carnegie Mellon University, calls the most influential global warming report of all time "preposterous . . . alarmist and incompetent."

Dr. Sami Solanki--director and scientific member at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany, who argues that changes in the Sun's state, not human activity, may be the principal cause of global warming: "The sun has been at its strongest over the past 60 years and may now be affecting global temperatures."

Prof. Freeman Dyson--one of the world's most eminent physicists says the models used to justify global warming alarmism are "full of fudge factors" and "do not begin to describe the real world."

Dr. Eigils Friis-Christensen--director of the Danish National Space Centre, vice-president of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, who argues that changes in the Sun's behavior could account for most of the warming attributed by the UN to man-made CO2.

I don't know why it does, but it may reflect that this site is being posted on a lot of other sites. I notice that the number one site is "realclimate", which is clearly an alarmist site. If this site is going to achieve number one then we still have a lot of work to do! My goal for the second year of this blog is to get closer to number 1, so visitors spread the word please!

SEA LEVEL CONTROVERSY IN MALDIVES

This story in the Telegraph explains how the new President of the Maldives is worried about the sea level rise forecast by climate alarmists. This seems completely at odds with the scientific research carried out on the islands and documented in the excellent video "Global Warming - Doomsday Called Off" (to find the section about the Maldives go to about 28-30 minutes in) where sea levels have been found to have fallen. It seems astonishing that the President should believe alarmists over the actual evidence on the shore.

KIDS TARGETED IN GREENPEACE CARTOON

A few days ago I came across a Greenpeace propaganda film using John F. Kennedy's image. Now I have been sent a cartoon portraying the evil "coalfinger" and his coal power station emissions being tackled by the Greenpeace good guys. You can see the huge propaganda effort to win over the public. The "coalfinger" cartoon, I am reliably informed would have cost in the region of £250,000 to make. Alarmists often talk about the massive "big oil" lobby against them, but when all the government funding is handed out to these NGO's it is they who are the well-funded lobby, while the sceptics "big oil" money is just a myth.

Here is the manifesto of an Australian council candidate standing for election in Melbourne at the end of this month. I wish him the best of luck with his campaign. He is right to highlight the issue, but will the public be persuaded?

ROLL OF HONOUR

Having just been given a copy of Hansard including the recent debate on the UK Climate Change Bill Third Reading I thought I ought to pay tribute to the small band of MPs who defied the whips and voted against this monstrous attack on our nation. The vote was 463 in favour and 3 against. Each side has 2 tellers so I will include the two as they also supported the opposition. There are 646 MPs and so as only 470 voted, another 176 thought it not worth opposing, or some might have thought it a lost cause to fight against it. Of course the "whipping" system was used to persuade any ditherers to support the party line, so there are no doubt some (maybe many) who do not agree with the bill, but voted for it in order to safeguard their job on the front benches - that is how parliament works.

If the sceptics are eventually proved to be correct and temperatures do not continue to rise in line with predictions by alarmists, then the 641 MPs who did not vote against it will be seen to have failed in their duty to look after the interests of the people. In the mean time the measures that they approved will lead to considerable cost increases in almost everything that we purchase. All for nothing.

FIDDLING WITH THE DATA?

Is there something dishonest going on at the heart of the climate science world? It is difficult to know who to believe when trying to unravel all the statistics quoted on this subject, but this article shows what appears to be a blatant fiddle of the actual temperature records. It seems quite extraordinary to see, but the two graphs shown in the article seem quite clear. It is the scientific equivalent of getting caught with your hand in the till. We must have honesty in gathering the temperature record.

Today I celebrate a whole year of information on this blog. Since I began, the evidence for the CO2 theory has been found to be very thin indeed. The climate computer models have been proved to be incorrect as no significant warming has occurred in the troposphere and even the warming itself has ceased for nearly a decade. Meanwhile governments are continuing to plan ever more elaborate schemes to tax carbon emissions from all of us. The battle for hearts and minds is far from over.

SCIENTIFIC CONFUSION ABOUT ROLE OF TREES

Do trees keep the planet cool, or do they warm it up? I'm sure most people would say that the answer is obvious, but scientists are not so sure. Take a look at this article which suggests they do keep us cool, and then contrast it with this one by a different group of scientists which suggests the opposite.

This is an example of the way science works with lots of different research reaching apparently contradictory conclusions. On the question of the role of CO2, however, only one conclusion seems to be acceptable.

COMMONS WAFFLES WHILE SNOW FALLS

This report shows how our MPs waffled for hours on how they were going to "save the planet" from catastrophic global warming, while outside temperatures plunged causing the first October snow for 70 years. Just as we need a plentiful supply of cheap energy to keep warm they are planning to land us with massive extra costs in order to rid us of CO2 - or 80% of it by 2050; meanwhile over in China and India they are ready to build new coal-fired power stations ready to take our jobs and our industry.

According to this research by Norwegian scientists the Arctic was much warmer than today about 6-7,000 years ago. They point to compelling evidence on the ground to back up their claim. Yet more evidence of our changing climate.

COUNCIL ALARMISTS AT IT AGAIN

UK local government is under a relentless barrage of propaganda from the Local Government Association's weekly magazine "First". The latest issue contains more alarmist scaremongering, listing all weather related costs incurred by a council in the past five years. The article then implies that these are all caused by "climate change". There is no attempt to compare the last five years with any other five year periods in the past, so we have no evidence to show that our weather is any more "extreme" than in the past.

The article then makes the even bigger assumption that reducing CO2 would prevent further damaging weather events occurring. It would be laughable if it wasn't for the fact that massive costs are being incurred on the basis of this empty-headed nonsense!

NEW SUNSPOT CYCLE STARTS

This report shows what's been happening. The sun's magnetic field is still much lower than it has been and the old sunspot cycle is still lingering on. Could this unusual behaviour have important implications for our climate?

NEW "CLIMATE CHANGE" MINISTER LEARNS ART OF DOUBLE-SPEAK

In further similarities to 1984Ed Miliband, the new minister for Energy and Climate Change is expected to argue for aviation emissions to be ruled out of the proposed cuts in CO2 at a meeting in Brussels, much to the anger of the Green activists. This is another example of the duplicity at the heart of climate politics. It is much more politics than science, much more about image than substance. Even 2020 is sufficently far away that hardly any serving minister will expect to be in power when the plan finally hits the buffers.

COMPUTER SAYS - BE AFRAID!

You've guessed it - another group of alarmists have fed their "data" into their wonderful computer programmes and come up with a catalogue of woes, according to this article in the Mail. This report sounds as though it is a proper scientific study, but where is the evidence? It claims that we are subject to more "extreme" weather events but cite no data to prove it. Where studies have been carried out on this in the USA they show that there is no such trend there, so why should we believe there is one in Europe.

Here is another dollop of doom and gloom, but where is the science which should be under-pinning all this? Nowhere to be seen! Contrast this with the calm professionalism of Prof. John Christy. I fear that many people may be swayed by the shrill propaganda, but I hope that cooler heads may yet prevail, particularly if we get a severe winter. That must be the alarmists worst nightmare, though if it does happen you can bet they will try to blame it on "climate change".

Science should only be based on clear and precise facts. Most of the current climate scare stories are based on propaganda. They talk of predictions of droughts and we get floods; so without any evidence the alarmists then say that global warming will produce both in the same place. The evidence says that these extremes have always occurred and no evidence has been produced to say otherwise.

AN OPEN LETTER ON GW TO SENATOR McCAIN

Here is an open letter to presidential candidate John McCain from Viscount Monckton in which he sets out fully the case for stopping the current policy of decarbonising our economy.I hope other leaders will take note.
