COSMIC RAYS HIT 50 YEAR HIGH

As the sun's magnetic field declines, as shown by the current sunspot minimum, cosmic rays are 19% higher according to this NASA report. We do not know what effect this will have on climate, but several experts believe it will lead to increased cloud cover which will reflect more of the sun's radiation and cool the planet.

SHOULD WE AIM FOR THE STARS?

Someone once said that " a man may be lying in the gutter, but he is looking at the stars." (or may be something similar, I can't quite remember it).

Here is a fascinating website for those who like to speculate on the future of mankind. It looks at the vast energy required for long distance space travel, and although today it looks unattainable, it is no more so than a rocket would have been to our ancestors 300 years ago when the steam engine was invented. The point is that the green activists who constantly carp on about reducing our energy use would slow technological progress which depends on increasing available energy. They are pessimists. Progress depends on optimists.

'EMISSION CUTS AN ILLUSION'

According to this BBC article the new UK Chief Scientist says the 'real' emissions of CO2 have not been reduced but merely moved abroad as we manufacture less and import more.

So the whole emission trading bureaucracy is just a scam, creating an illusion. When the truth is revealed we are simply wasting our money.

This comes only a few weeks after we learnt of the "missing" temperature data from the Hadley Centre. This is doing the image of science no good at all.

ALARMIST BREAKS RANKS ON GW PREDICTION

Here is a very interesting forecast by a leading scientist from the alarmist camp given to a UN world conference on climate change (NOT on the news!). Talking to 1500 leading climate scientists,he says that we may be facing two decades of global cooling, after which he expects further warming to continue. He is saying things which most other alarmists would not want mentioned, but in saying it he is at last opening up the debate and making it harder for other alarmists to credibly deny that previous certainty about our understanding of the science is no longer sustainable. Those who previously said things like "the science is settled" and "there is now consensus" are starting to look very foolish and their credibility is in serious question.

MILIBANDS - THE NEW BROTHERS GRIM

As fairy tales go the latest offering from David Miliband (UK Foreign Secretary)are, to say the least, a little hard to swallow - see this report in the Guardian. His brother Ed, the Minister for Climate Change would be proud of him. Here is a small extract: "The spectre of a 4C warmer world, with alligators basking off the coast of Sweden, a vast desert surrounding the Mediterranean and a largely uninhabitable mainland Europe, is to be presented to European Union countries." Will this scare the politicans of Europe into spending billions on so-called "preventative measures"? One can just imagine the nightmares being suffrered with Heads of State hidng under the duvet!

"ONLY GEO-ENGINEERING CAN SAVE US"

This report by (you've guessed it) geo-engineers, makes the claim that CO2 reductions will not be enough to save us from the ravages of global warming. It is interesting to note that there are geo-engineering solutions, and my thinking is that if they exist then we can save them for the time when they are needed, instead of wasting countless billions in a futile attempt to reduce emissions of CO2.

OIL SUPPLY BOOST

This Guardian story tells of a huge new oil find in the Gulf of Mexico. While we can never predict the future accurately this find is further proof that there is no immediate lack of oil and so no desparate need to transform our energy source (that is unless you believe the climate alarmists).

CHINA SAYS THE POLLUTER MUST PAY

This article from Forbes magazine explains the stance being taken by the Chinese on the issue of paying for CO2 reductions. It is an interesting argument, but one way of interpreting this is to put a tax on chinese imports. I know the Chinese do not want this outcome - they want the West to hand over Billions of dollars to them, but another way to stop chinese emissions is to put a tax on them. Watch out China - be careful what you wish for!

Christopher Booker's Column explains the bureaucratic way in which the UK government has apparently failed to implement a water-tight ban on the incandescent light bulbs. According to the government they should be banned as from 1st September, but it is doubtful if there is a clear law to back up this ban. This article shows how the low energy bulbs are being promoted on a false prospectus. We must wait for the first "light bulb martyr" to be prosecuted for selling one!

COST OF CLIMATE CHANGE - £300 BILLION A YEAR

In a report just published by the International Institiute for Environment and Development (IIED) the findings are that the cost of adaption and mitigation are much higher than that given by the Stern Report. The figures given by the IIED demonstrate the enormity of the task of decarbonising the planet's emissions. It's a task that democratically elected governments will find it impossible to finance without becoming very unpopular, particularly in the current recession. UK TAXPAYER TO PAY FOR MORE GW PROPAGANDA

This article explains how the Carbon Trust, which the UK government funds (to the tune of £100 million last year) in order to promote climate change propaganda in Britain, is now going to launch an international campaign in the USA. GOBBLEDEGOOK ENVIRO-SPEAK

As a councillor I often read reports and sometimes find them heavy going. In fact when I look at some of the ones given out on climate change they seem to be so long and impenetrable that I wonder if anyone reads them at all. The other day Peter Lilley MP sent me a copy of the reply tohis letter to the Climate Change Minister requesting answers to a number of questions. The answers were, of course, non-answers in as much as they were based on a set of assumptions that could not be verified, and could be argued to be completely wrong. In his reply, however, the minister referrred to some reports on websites, and so I thought I would check these out in case there was any useful mis-information in them.

The first one was barred to me, but the second referred to a 560 page report on changing to a low-carbon economy (yawn). Moving swiftly to number three I found a 108 page report about emission trading. Only 108! - I started it, and when I got to page 8 I found this nugget:

"It is difficult to anticipate what fraction of costs firms in the cement and steel industry will be able to pass through, most likely more than 0% and at least in the island situation of the UK also less than 100%. If we assume for example that 50% of the costs of CO2 allowances are passed through, then free allocation covering about half the emissions retains current profit levels. This result is sensitive to assumptions on international trade elasticities." For those with insomnia here is the link to the report.

This new study by Danish scientists shows a link between the strength of the Earth's magnetic field and the climate over a long time span. The effect is similar to that of the Sun's magnetic field which was the theory put forward by other scientists previously. All these theories are difficult to prove but no more so than the current one of CO2 being responsible for catastrophic global warming.

"SECRET" DATA DESTROYED ADMITS TOP ALARMIST

OZ SENATE REJECTS EMISSION TRADING SCHEME

Breaking news - The Australian Senate has just rejected the Emission Trading Scheme put forward by the Labour government. Details here. This deadlock could lead eventually to a dissolution of parliament, unless a compromise can be reached. At least there is a resistance down there, unlike the supine surrender here in the UK.

It seems incredible to me that the few scientists who have access to the world's temperature data claim that they cannot disclose the data "because of confidentiality agreements". Instead of cutting its CO2 the government will have to pay the extra millions to "offset" its extra emissions. Welcome to the barmy world of trying to save the planet from global warming.

YET ANOTHER FLAW IN THE ALARMIST SCIENCE

Here is another piece of science that does not fit with the alarmist theory of CO2 causing "dangerous warming" of the planet. The article is rather lengthy and contains a lot of technical language, though it is quite clear if you have a little science background. Basically it explains that the "residence time" (RT) for CO2 to remain in the atmosphere is alleged by the alarmist scientists to be between 50 and 200 years, or some state even up to 1000 years. This RT is essential for the CO2 theory to stack up. However in the article, Scientists have calculated, as the article shows, that the true RT for CO2 is only between 5 to 15 years. The evidence presented seems very convincing and I don't see how science on such an issue cannot be resolved by all the experts, but if they cannot agree on even one fundamental point then clearly the science of climate is impossible to agree on.

GERMAN SCIENTISTS - "CO2 THEORY NOT CORRECT"

This article explains that 60 top German scientists have written to Angela Merkel to ask her to look again at the latest science before committing the government to expensive measures to reduce CO2. Yet further evidence of a lack of "consensus" on the issue.

SEA LEVEL RISE PREDICTED TO BE BETWEEN 7CM AND 82CM

This is the result of a research project - details in this report. The difference depends on the degree of warming that occurs, so if temperatures rise in line with the previous century then the rise will be around 3 inches - even less than the rise observed in the last century which was believed to be around 7 inches.

"SMART" METERS TO COST US £300 EACH

Every household in the UK will have to pay a total of £300 each by 2020 so that electric companies can fit new "smart" meters. These meters are supposed to lead to energy savings by consumers switching off appliances (they hope!) and will also enable readings to be taken remotely. Although this will lead to very substantial savings for the companies, it is the poor old consumer that has to pay, according to this article in the Telegraph.

UNIVERSITIES TO LOSE FUNDS IF THEY FAIL EMISSIONS TESTS

You would think that reducing energy use in any organisation would be a win-win situation, but that is only true if the savings can be made at a reasonable cost. Beyond that it is not worth doing unless someone changes the rules.

This article in the Times explains how the government are using a carrot and stick approach to coerce universities into reducing their CO2 emissions. Yet another example of how this obsession with CO2 is set to drive up costs through artificial government intervention. One way or another students will end up with the bill.

ANOTHER NEW TAX TO "SAVE THE PLANET"

Now councils are to tax workplace parking spaces in an attempt to coerce motorists into abandoning their cars. The story in the Telegraph explains the (flawed) thinking behind this new tax. Apparently even the government recognises it will adversely affect business and so has delayed its introduction by a year. Yet more pain for no gain.

SCIENTISTS CALL FOR ALARMIST EDITOR TO BE SACKED

This articledescribes the strong feelings of members of the American Chemical Society towards their magazine editor for his strong support for the CO2 theory of global warming. It is interesting to read the high level of support for scientists who take a view that the CO2 theory is far from proven. This reaction clearly shows that there is no consensus on the science.

THE MASSIVE COST OF BUYING SCIENCE

This report explains the massive amount being spent on obtaining the "proof" that CO2 is causing catastrophic climate change. Yet despite this no clear evidence has been found. Iy is both amazing and at the same time very worrying that so much has been spent to effectively buy a sphere of science and deny any contrary research to be heard.

OZ ENERGY FIRM TAKEN TO COURT FOR EMITTING CO2

This report explains the details of the civil court case that is to take place in Australia. This will be a landmark case and it is to be hoped that the company mount a good defence (unlike this UK firm!)otherwise this nonsense will become commonplace in Western courts.

FLAWED FORECASTS

So the Met Office has at last decided to "revise" its long range forecast for this summer. They have decided it is not going to be a "barbecue summer" after all. A bit late perhaps, but to be fair they only said there was a 65% chance that their forecast would be correct. In fact they have incorrectly forecast similar weather for the past three years. This article in the Guardian explains that "the accuracy of a forecast is diminished by the inherent chaos of weather systems. As forecasters look further and further ahead, the chaotic behaviour of the atmosphere makes predictions less and less reliable". It then curiously goes on to say "they help businesses affected by the weather to plan ahead", which begs two questions; first how can they be of any use when they are so likely to be wrong, and secondly if the Met Office can't forecast six months ahead why do they believe they can make forecasts for the coming century, and why should anyone have confidence in them?

Continuing from the last point, why should governments add thousands of pounds to peoples cost of living to combat "dangerous climate change" based on such flawed forecasts?

WHAT ARE ALARMISTS PREDICTING FOR CLIMATE?

Here is one prediction in a recent New York Times article from a NASA scientist forecasting a possible Dalton Minimum. Yet, at the same time, I read this item in the Telegraph predicting record high temperatures in the next few years, again allegedly coming from NASA. I know that these predictions are extremely difficult so why won't the media admit that it really amounts to no more than educated guess work, instead of pretending that scientists really understand all the complex interactions that make up our climate.

This is a novel idea, but the paper has been peer reviewed, so it deserves to be taken seriously. However it should also be pointed out that these calculations do not take into account mechanisms which lose heat from the earth such as the role of clouds.

Let's be honest, the present system is not perfect and listing its defects is easy to do, but when it comes to practical alternatives they seem to be relying on massive state intervention and controls to create an "equal society" in which many things are rationed. Running right through it is the assumption that carbon must be severely reduced and rationed.

Some might think that these organisations are looking at what used to be called "communism" and dressing it up in a new wrapper.

The World Development Movement (WDM - yet another well funded NGO which hardly anyone has heard of!) is holding a demonstration today at the Kingsnorth power station to protest against the proposal to build a new coal-fired power station on the site. You can read the claims they are making here. They are based on nothing more than guesswork using data which is itself completely unreliable, but the figures are obviously designed to sound scary. It is pure propaganda but where is the rebuttal? Unless these kind of things are rebutted then they will be believed by the gullible and uninformed. I bet there are no demonstrations in favour of building a new plant, yet without new plants the electricity supply will become unreliable and the lights will go out. Only then will the public wake up - when the damage has been done and it's too late.

Any politician interested in preserving Australian jobs must vote against “The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme”. It will not change the climate, it will do nothing useful for the planet and it will destroy real jobs faster than green jobs can be created.

This deceptively misnamed bill is not about “carbon” nor about “pollution reduction” – it is designed to Ration and Tax human production of carbon dioxide (CO2). It is correctly named “the Carbon Dioxide Ration and Tax Scheme” or “the RAT Scheme” for short.

There is no human activity or business that produces zero carbon dioxide – every activity (even sleeping on the job) produces CO2, either directly or indirectly. And for Australia’s chief industries, there is no feasible alternative on the horizon. Electricity generation, transport and tourism, agriculture and food processing, mining and mineral processing, infrastructure and construction, forestry and fishing, metals and cement, electronics and appliances – all depend for most of their energy on hydro-carbons – coal, oil and gas.

Even with a crash-through program of investment in alternative energy, the base load power will still be required, with boilers charged and staff on standby to cope with the many times when there is neither sun nor wind energy available. Given time and the political will, nuclear power could take up base-load power generation (at higher costs). But that looks unlikely to occur any time soon.

The first thing the RAT Scheme will do is establish a “cap” - a ration or limit on the production of CO2. (The exact level of the cap, and the base reference year will apparently be set using a roulette wheel in Penny Wong’s office.)

The whole purpose of the cap is to force Australia’s backbone industries to reduce production of CO2 (unless of course they are exempted, but that would make the whole exercise even more pointless and unfair than it is now). There are no real alternatives available in many applications (solar aircraft? wind powered trucks? geothermal fishing trawlers?) Thus the cap must thus reduce production.

This throttling of our key industries by way of Emission ration permits will cause the first round of job layoffs. Then comes the tax whammy.

Most industries will have to pay for their cap entitlement – ie they have to pay to do what they have previously been doing for free. Even after they have paid for production up to their rationed entitlement, any business which wishes to return to its pre-Rat scheme production levels (above the cap), must buy new ration permits in a speculative Emissions Permit market. This is another tax which has to be recovered from customers, other businesses or shareholders.

The first law of fiscal policy is this: “If you tax something, less of it will be produced.” This is the real aim of the RAT Scheme and it will achieve that aim.

There are always marginal businesses in all industries. An increase in taxes will cause a few of them to close their doors or move to a more enlightened country. And there are always nervous bankers ready to pull the plug because of the extra risk in the speculative carbon trading market.

In the green new world there is also no room for new projects or new jobs in traditional industries – any new project will need to force closure of an old project by buying its Ration permits on the market.

These new and uncertain taxes on existing production will cause the second round of job losses.

Even those businesses that survive the production cap, the ration fee and the excess carbon tax, will be forced to increase their prices to recoup the extra costs. This makes them less able to compete with imports in the Australian market, or with other exporters in the world market. Countries such as India, China, Brazil and South Africa, who have no intention of embracing the shackles of a RAT Scheme, will be the chief beneficiaries. Overseas is where the real new jobs will be created.

This unfair competition from foreign firms will cause the third round of jobs layoffs.

To date we have only looked at things from the perspective of existing industry.

There is also a whole gamut of global warming policies that will directly or indirectly subsidize regulators, inspectors, auditors, lawyers, bankers, carbon traders, international conferences, and the manufacture and operation of subsidised facilities such as wind farms, solar arrays, carbon forests and facilities granted exemptions from the costs everyone else must bear.

The second law of fiscal policy is this: “If you subsidise something, you will get more of it”.

We will thus get more of these costly subsidised things – the Climate Change Industry looks like becoming the biggest industry in the world. It will compete with real industry for materials, labour and rationed energy, but will not put cheaper food on our plate, cheaper or more reliable electricity into the grid or make a net contribution to tax revenue.

The growing costs of the Climate Change Industry must filter back to the real economy, causing more job layoffs.

Three places in the world have already tested the Green Job Creation Myth – Spain and Denmark with massive wind and solar power developments and California which tries to lead the world in everything green.

All three have seen loss of jobs as industries close or relocate because of costly or unreliable electricity supply. A recent study in Spain has concluded that more than 2 real jobs were destroyed for every green job created. In addition Spain has 17% unemployment, electricity shortages, and power costs up by from 30% (homes) to 100% (businesses). Denmark is selling unreliable wind power at a loss, and California’s climate madness has caused a huge loss of jobs and tax revenue.

Surely Australia can learn from the mistakes of others and refuse to pass this dangerous legislation.

Read the details of this meeting here on Jo Nova's blog. It may not change hearts, let alone minds, but at least there was a meeting at which opposing views were put. On reading the account, one thing seemed to emerge, and that is that the alarmists do not want to discuss the science - I wonder why???

BA CHIEF PROPOSES WORLD WIDE FLIGHT TAX

British Airways Chief Executive, Willie Walsh, has proposed a carbon tax on all flights world wide. This is a very noble gesture on his part, with the passengers picking up the unquantified bill. On the other hand he could be accused of gesture politics, as it seems unlikely that any world wide agreement is going to be reached. Typical of so many of our company chiefs today, trying to appear "green", while hoping it won't happen. The trouble with this policy is that it enhances the whole global warming nonsense ever further making it more difficult to make the alternative case that global warming is nothing to do with CO2. BBC FAILS TO SCRUTINISE MINISTER ON CLIMATE DATA

Just listen to this feeble effort (scroll down to 8.15) at challenging the UK climate minister, Hilary Benn, on the new detailed forecasts of climate change for the UK over the next century. No mention whatsoever of the fact that these forecasts are made using computer climate models which have failed to predict the recent nine years of decline in average world temperatures, or of their failure to predict that the atmosphere would fail to warm more than the surface temperature. The failure of the BBC to probe these so-called predictions is lamentable, as well as being a dereliction of their duty.

UK CLIMATE PROPAGANDA TO BRAINWASH LOCAL GOVERNMENT

This is the latest event to ensure that local government remains "on message" regarding the global warming solution. No mention here of the facts; like the warming has ceased and the globe has been cooling for nine years. No mention of anything "inconvenient". Government can never be wrong can it?

IPCC WRONG ABOUT MEDIEVAL WARM PERIOD - NEW RESEARCH

This new research shows that the last IPCC report was wrong to conclude that evidence shows that the medieval warm period was not consistent over the globe. The new report says the evidence produced by the IPCC is not reliable. Further it says that if the Medieval Warm Period was real and must have occurred naturally, then the argument that the recent warming is man-made is also not reliable and scientists must admit that it could also be natural in origin. Yet another nail in the coffin of the alarmists.

MET OFFICE TO GIVE DETAILED FORECAST FOR REST OF THE CENTURY

Yes, it's true, the people who have difficulty predicting the weather for the next week are going to give the UK a detailed breakdown of the way they believe the climate is going to change over the next century, according to this report in the Telegraph.

Why are they doing this? One explanation is given in this quote by a spokesman, "Ordinary people will be able to see how critical climate change is..... It will hammer it home." (That is if they believe the forecasts, and also they believe the climate changes can be prevented by cutting CO2.)

Since the real climate is not giving us any evidence of catastrophic change, the alarmists are resorting to predictions in the vain hope that we will find these scary enough to make us support the government's very costly measures to cut CO2.

Today on going into my blog to make a new post I found this notice:

I was then presented with one of those distorted writings to decipher, which I did and as you can see my post still came up. I have requested a review and hope all will be well. If the blog disappears, then readers will know the reason. I hope this is just a glitch and not an attack by climate alarmists.

MORE PROPAGANDA AND DECEIT?

BBC radio programme Costing the Earth was recently broadcast claiming that the Cartaret Islands were being submerged by rising sea levels. This claim just does not fit the evidence, however. While there is no doubt that the islands are suffering by inundations of sea water, the reason for this is because the islands are SINKING as they sit on top of a subduction zone. Sea level monitoring records on either side of the islands show clearly that there has been no rise in sea level.

A UK PHYSICS TEACHER'S LAMENT FOR HIS DUMBED DOWN SUBJECT

This open letter by a UK physics teacher highlights an important issue - the gradual dumbing down of "difficult" subjects. This seems to have now reached the point where the whole purpose of the subject is being lost. All very sad and damaging not only to the students, but ultimately to our society.

This is the latest pronouncement from the global warming scientists as can be seen from this article. The extraordinary thing is that in the 2007 IPCC report this was not mentioned. At that time they attributed all the warming to greenhouse gases. This suggests to me that these computer climate models may prove to be a tad inaccurate, which is what sceptices have been saying for some time.

A NEW WORLD BUREAUCRACY URGED BY UK REPORT

This report in the Guardian alerts us to the ideas being considered by the UK government to enforce any new treaty on "climate change". Clearly this issue is being used to further an agenda towards a world government, or at least a huge bureaucracy which will no doubt lead to massive costs and corruption.

THE COMING BUREAUCRATIC NIGHTMARE

But with all the mushrooming organisations clamouring to get involved in the bureaucracy no one actually cares about the end result - other than that a lot of bureaucrats will make a good living out of it. SCHOOL STUDENTS "BRAINWASHED" AGAIN

This article in the Mail on Sunday shows that students are again being influenced to take a particular point of view on controversial matters. This is exactly what is happening with respect to the global warming issue, as highlighted by the showing of the Al Gore polemic in UK schools.

If this survey of sixth formers is anything to go by, the brainwashing is still not effective enough. No doubt more will be provided.

COMMON SENSE ON "CARBON CAPTURE"

This submission to the New Zealand parliament is direct and to the point. I only wish we could see more of it to other governments (specially the UK!) Will "carbon capture" become an expensive white elephant?

CO2 THEORY FAILS THE OCEAN HEAT TEST

This compelling paper sets out a test by which the CO2 theory of global warming can be proven true or false. Here is one short extract from its findings:

"In brief, we know of no mechanism by which vast amounts of “missing” heat can be hidden, transferred, or absorbed within the earth’s system. The only reasonable conclusion-call it a null hypothesis-is that heat is no longer accumulating in the climate system and there is no longer a radiative imbalance caused by anthropogenic forcing. This not only demonstrates that the IPCC models are failing to accurately predict global warming, but also presents a serious challenge to the integrity of the AGW hypothesis."

POLISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCE SCEPTICAL OF CO2 THEORY

This paper by the Polish Academy of Geological Science shows that in other countries scientists are more willing to express their doubts over the current global warming theory even at official levels.
